Synopsis
In the era of mobile internet and big data, reading ability has become increasingly more important due to the explosive growth of information types and rapid development of new reading platforms. With the advancement of cross-disciplinary technologies such as artificial intelligence, there is a growing need to acquire interdisciplinary and multilingual knowledge and capabilities. In recent years, the rising international prominence of English and Chinese languages has driven the demand for Chinese-English bilinguals and multilingual proficiency across all fields. This book introduces the assessments and methods of modern bilingual reading ability development. Based on the experiences of Singapore and Hong Kong, combined with the bilingual background of Chinese students in Singapore schools as case study, the theory and practice of Chinese-English bilingual reading ability is systematically described and presented here.
The book is mainly divided into nine parts. The first chapter introduces the background of bilingual reading ability development assessments and methods, and elaborates its importance in today’s society. The second chapter focuses on the basic theories of reading ability development and introduces the general context and background of Chinese and English reading research in Singapore. The third chapter discusses international reading ability assessments, mainly examining the theory and framework of the Progress in International Reading Literacy Research (PIRLS) and its application in education research, as well as the assessment of reading ability and the experience of bilingual reading ability research in Hong Kong and Singapore. This chapter also elaborates the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and its application to teaching and education research in Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as a summary of the two reading assessment frameworks. Chapter Four explains the research focus, theory and methodology behind Singapore’s bilingual reading research, as well as the evaluation and analysis of bilingual reading ability and its development process. Chapter Five mainly establishes the quantitative research methodology for bilingual reading research, including research question design, data collection and statistical analysis. It will also cover the basic concept of quantitative research, such as common variable types, principles behind samples and sample size selection, data classification etc., using examples to further elaborate the ideas. Chapter Six mainly introduces the qualitative research methods of modern bilingual reading assessment, common data collection, transcription and analysis methodology with examples. Here, the application of qualitative research tools in education research, as well as detailed examples for bilingual reading research design, will be covered, ending with a comparison between quantitative and qualitative research methods. Chapter Seven, based on the research experience of bilingual reading in Singapore and Hong Kong, introduces the present research method, integrating quantitative and qualitative assessment for the development of modern bilingual reading ability. Chapter Eight mainly presents specific examples and analysis processes of the integrated quantitative and qualitative research on the assessment of bilingual reading ability development, as well as elaborated examples of bilingual reading ability development. Chapter Nine elaborates factors affecting the development of bilingual reading ability, effective methods and strategies for a balanced development and the future of bilingual reading research.
In this book, readers will find the framework to conducting bilingual
reading assessment, and the methods to analyze Chinese-English bilingual
reading ability for different ages, family language backgrounds and genders.
Readers will also learn how to use quantitative and qualitative research
methods to explore the relationship between the reading ability of two
languages, study the influence of student factor and teaching factor on the development
of bilingual reading ability and identify key influencing factors. Based on
their years of experience in bilingual reading education and academic research,
the authors of this book share their research experience with readers, hoping
to benefit readers in finding their own research directions and constructing
their own research topics.
